UNHCR calls for global support to address Haiti’s displacement crisis

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has called for urgent international support to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Haiti, where violence and insecurity have displaced over 700,000 people. During a visit to the country, UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, Raouf Mazou, emphasized the need for enhanced security, increased funding, and global solidarity to provide life-saving assistance and restore stability.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is calling for urgent international assistance to address the growing displacement and insecurity in Haiti. Ongoing violence by armed groups has forced over 700,000 people to flee their homes, leaving many without access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.

During a recent visit to Haiti, UNHCR officials witnessed the severe impact of the country’s instability, which has worsened living conditions for vulnerable communities. The agency emphasized the need for immediate funding and global cooperation to provide humanitarian aid and improve security in the country.

The displacement crisis has strained Haiti’s limited resources, with humanitarian efforts underfunded. Only 39% of the $674 million needed for the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan has been raised. UNHCR continues to work with Haitian authorities and international partners to address these challenges, but warns that without increased global support, the situation will further deteriorate.

In addition to supporting those displaced within the country, UNHCR is also engaging with other nations to ensure protection and legal pathways for Haitian refugees abroad.
