The UN Security Council is set to hold a briefing on October 22 to address Haiti’s ongoing political and security crisis. María Isabel Salvador, Special Representative for the UN in Haiti, will update the council on the political landscape, including the delayed transition process aimed at holding elections by 2026. Key representatives from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UNICEF will provide additional insights on the deteriorating security situation and humanitarian impact.
Gang violence continues to escalate in Port-au-Prince, with over 1,400 murders recorded between June and August 2024, according to a recent UN report. The Haitian National Police, supported by a Kenyan-led multinational security mission, has struggled with limited resources in its efforts to control the violence. Meanwhile, nearly half of the population faces severe food insecurity, exacerbating displacement and human rights violations.
The Security Council is expected to focus on political accountability and international support for addressing the security and humanitarian crises.
