New York, NY, October 22, 2024 — U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea spoke at the UN Security Council, reaffirming U.S. support for Haiti’s political transition and condemning ongoing gang violence. She expressed condolences for victims of the Pont-Sondé massacre and highlighted the importance of the UN’s work in Haiti.

Shea noted progress with the establishment of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) and the formation of a new government, calling for continued national unity. She praised the MSS mission’s joint efforts with the Haitian National Police (HNP) in restoring security, which led to the reopening of the airport and increased economic activity.

Shea urged further international funding and called for transitioning the MSS mission into a full UN peacekeeping operation for long-term stability. She also supported recent UN sanctions on individuals enabling gang violence and reiterated U.S. commitment to Haiti’s future.
