Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will travel to Paris on Saturday to attend the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral. The event marks the completion of the cathedral’s restoration following the devastating 2019 fire.
Trump shared the news on his Truth Social platform, calling the cathedral “magnificent and full of history” and praising French President Emmanuel Macron for the “remarkable work” done to restore the landmark. Around fifty heads of state and government are expected to be present at the ceremony.
Notre-Dame Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has undergone extensive reconstruction efforts since the fire. The tragedy, which shocked the world, sparked an outpouring of financial support and solidarity from individuals, governments, and institutions worldwide.
The reopening ceremony is expected to include a mix of cultural and religious activities, reaffirming Notre-Dame’s role as both a spiritual and historical landmark. French officials have expressed pride in the restoration efforts, which were completed on schedule despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
