Haiti’s Presidential Transition Council member, Smith Augustin, participated in the 16th Annual Leadership Summit of the National Haitian American Elected Officials Network (NHAEON) in Miami, Florida. The event, held under the theme “Hope to Action: Amplifying Haitian American Voices,” focused on enhancing the diaspora’s role in shaping Haiti’s future.
Augustin’s intervention centered on the diaspora’s key role in governance, economic development, and civic engagement. He encouraged Haitian-Americans to participate in Haiti’s democratic process, stressing the importance of securing their National Identification Card (CIN) to vote in the upcoming referendum and elections. The referendum, potentially tied to a new constitution, could formally recognize the diaspora’s right to vote.
His remarks were well received, with several Haitian-American leaders expressing support for stronger collaboration between Haiti and its diaspora. The event underscored a shared commitment to increasing the diaspora’s influence in Haiti’s political and economic landscape.
Improving Access to Identification Documents
As part of ongoing efforts to improve government services for Haitians abroad, Kathia Verdier, Haiti’s Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), conducted an evaluation visit to the Consulate of Haiti in New York. She was accompanied by Reynold Guerrier, Director General of the National Identification Office (ONI), and a delegation assessing the efficiency of identification services provided to the diaspora.
This initiative aims to streamline access to reliable identity documents, ensuring that all Haitians living abroad can fully exercise their civil rights. The delegation evaluated current identification services, identified areas for improvement, and discussed measures to enhance collaboration between MHAVE, ONI, and Haiti’s diplomatic missions.
Minister Verdier reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening ties between Haiti and its diaspora through efficient identification services. She emphasized that securing proper identification is essential for participation in elections and national decision-making.
These efforts align with Haiti’s broader goal of integrating its diaspora into national governance, recognizing their potential to contribute to economic recovery and democratic progress.
