Kenyan President William Ruto has called on the African Union (AU) to formally acknowledge Haiti as part of Africa’s Sixth Region. During the 38th Ordinary Assembly of the AU, held in Ethiopia, Ruto proposed a declaration of solidarity with Haiti, highlighting the country’s historical and cultural connections to the African continent.

According to Ruto, Haiti’s recognition would serve as a meaningful gesture of unity and reinforce Africa’s commitment to supporting Haiti’s stability. He also linked this proposal to Kenya’s leadership role in the ongoing multinational security mission in Haiti, which has faced delays and logistical challenges.

The concept of Africa’s “Sixth Region” was introduced by the AU to acknowledge the African diaspora worldwide. Haiti, as the first independent Black republic and a nation with strong African heritage, has long been considered a key part of this diaspora.

Beyond symbolic recognition, Ruto also called for increased AU support for Haiti, particularly regarding the security challenges the country faces. He urged AU leaders to facilitate the transition of the current Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission—led by Kenya—into a full United Nations peacekeeping operation.

This shift would ensure broader international funding and logistical support for security efforts in Haiti, which continues to struggle with gang violence and political instability. The mission, initially approved by the UN in 2023, has faced setbacks due to limited resources and slow deployment.

Ruto’s proposal comes as part of a broader agenda for AU institutional reform. Alongside his call for Haiti’s recognition, he has introduced several initiatives aimed at strengthening governance, financial independence, and security frameworks within the AU.

If the AU moves forward with Ruto’s recommendation, Haiti could gain greater access to African-led initiatives, including economic partnerships and security cooperation. However, the proposal would need to be discussed and ratified by AU member states before any formal designation is made.

Haiti’s recognition as part of Africa’s Sixth Region could mark a historic step in reinforcing ties between the Caribbean and African nations. As discussions continue, AU leaders will need to weigh the political, economic, and diplomatic implications of such a move.

For Haiti, stronger links with Africa could open new avenues for development and support, while for the AU, it represents an opportunity to affirm its commitment to the African diaspora and global solidarity.
