The Haitian government has unveiled a revised national budget designed to address the country’s spiraling insecurity and economic struggles. The plan, announced this week, focuses on funding critical security measures while laying the groundwork for economic recovery and sustainable development.
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé emphasized that the revised budget is a strategic response to Haiti’s “unprecedented multidimensional crisis.” It prioritizes bolstering the National Police to combat rampant gang violence, which has left much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, under the control of armed groups.
The revised budget dedicates significant resources to improving security infrastructure. With gangs dominating approximately 78% of Port-au-Prince and other regions, the government is focusing on immediate interventions to restore order and protect civilians.
As part of the strategy, a nationwide state of emergency took effect Sunday for one month, enabling a more coordinated effort to combat insecurity and facilitate humanitarian aid delivery.
Beyond security, the budget outlines measures to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and rehabilitate critical infrastructure. The government aims to stabilize macroeconomic conditions while addressing urgent humanitarian needs, including food insecurity and housing.
Economic recovery initiatives also tie into longer-term goals, such as constitutional reform and preparations for transparent elections. These steps are seen as critical to fostering political stability and attracting international support.
In tandem with budgetary reforms, Prime Minister Fils-Aimé has launched dialogues with key stakeholders, including religious leaders and civil society organizations. These discussions aim to promote national unity and collaboration in addressing Haiti’s challenges.
The administration stressed that rebuilding trust and fostering inclusion are as important as the financial and security measures outlined in the revised budget. “Haiti’s recovery depends on collective action and shared responsibility,” the statement read.
The revised budget represents a bold attempt to confront Haiti’s interlocking crises, but its success will hinge on effective implementation and public buy-in. As violence and economic struggles persist, many Haitians remain skeptical of government initiatives.
