WASHINGTON (Sept 26) – U.S. Representative Clay Higgins has removed a social media post that faced widespread criticism for its derogatory remarks about Haitian immigrants. The post, shared on X (formerly Twitter), referred to Haitians as “wild,” made references to “vudu,” and described Haiti in negative terms.
Higgins explained that the post was intended to target Haitian gangs rather than the broader Haitian population. However, the language used drew backlash from Democratic lawmakers, prompting Rep. Steve Horsford to attempt a censure, which was blocked by Republicans.
The incident comes amid rising anti-Haitian rhetoric in U.S. politics. Misinformation regarding Haitian immigrants has been spread by prominent figures, including presidential candidate Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance, who have made baseless claims that Haitians are eating pets. These false statements have contributed to growing anti-immigrant sentiment in certain regions, particularly in Springfield, Ohio, where around 20,000 Haitian immigrants reside. A local nonprofit has filed criminal charges against Trump and Vance, citing increased threats toward the local government.
