An operation by Haitian security forces aimed at dismantling the stronghold of notorious gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, also known as “Barbecue,” ended unsuccessfully. While police killed several of his lieutenants, Chérizier himself managed to escape, later appearing in a video to dismiss reports of his death and threaten further violence.

The operation, launched on March 1 in the Delmas district, was part of a broader effort led by a government “Task Force” created by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils Aimé and the Presidential Transition Council (CPT). The government had promised a firm response to criminal groups terrorizing the metropolitan region.

Rumors spread rapidly on social media suggesting that Chérizier had been captured or killed. Many Haitians, desperate for relief from gang violence, celebrated prematurely. However, hopes were short-lived as Chérizier himself later refuted the claims in a live broadcast.

In his video, he not only confirmed his escape but also vowed to acquire new weapons, a statement that alarmed many.

“The police attacked us, but we have the means to respond,” he declared.

The news of his survival has left many residents of Delmas and Tabarre anxious. For over a week, armed gangs have forced thousands to flee their homes, and the failed police operation risks worsening their situation.

The Prime Minister’s Office took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend the operation, stating, “The PNH is going on the offensive against armed gangs! The Task Force created by the government and the CPT, in less than 48 hours, is beginning to bear fruit.”

Despite these claims, many question the effectiveness of the operation. Rather than weakening Chérizier’s network, the raid has seemingly emboldened the Viv Ansanm coalition, which controls several neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince. Other gang leaders within the alliance have reportedly reinforced Chérizier’s group, preparing for future confrontations with law enforcement.

With the metropolitan region already under siege by armed groups, the failure to neutralize Chérizier has deepened fears of further violence. Residents who had begun to hope for relief now find themselves in an even more precarious situation.

Many Haitians are demanding stronger, better-coordinated security measures to restore stability. The challenge remains significant: without a decisive victory against gangs, the government risks losing further control over key areas of the capital.
