Haiti’s International Jazz Festival, PAPJAZZ 2025, is making a comeback despite the country’s ongoing instability. Originally scheduled for January, the event was postponed due to security concerns but will now take place from March 20 to 22.
The decision to reschedule reflects the determination of the festival’s organizers to keep Haiti’s cultural scene alive. The event, known for its vibrant mix of local and international jazz artists, is set to bring music lovers together in a show of artistic resilience.
PAPJAZZ was founded in 2007 and has since become one of the Caribbean’s most important jazz festivals. Over the years, it has welcomed renowned musicians such as Branford Marsalis, Kenny Garrett, and Emeline Michel, among others.
In its last edition, the festival featured artists from Cameroon, Spain, France, Martinique, and Mexico, alongside a strong Haitian and diaspora presence. This year’s lineup is expected to continue that tradition, offering a diverse mix of talent.
Haiti has been facing significant security challenges, which led to the postponement of the event. Organizers emphasized that ensuring the safety of attendees, artists, and technical teams was a top priority. However, rather than canceling, they have worked to adapt and ensure that the festival goes on in a secure manner.
The return of PAPJAZZ to Port-au-Prince is seen as an important cultural moment for the city. After a temporary relocation to Cap-Haïtien in 2023, the festival is reclaiming its place in the capital, reinforcing its commitment to local artistic development.
Beyond the performances, PAPJAZZ has always been about education and community engagement. Previous editions have included workshops for young musicians, environmental awareness activities, and cultural exchange programs. This year, similar initiatives are expected, further strengthening the festival’s role as a platform for artistic growth.
With live-streaming options introduced in 2021, PAPJAZZ continues to expand its reach beyond Haiti. This feature allows audiences worldwide to experience the richness of Haitian jazz while offering international exposure to local artists.
Despite the difficulties Haiti faces, PAPJAZZ 2025 stands as a testament to the country’s unwavering spirit. It is not just a celebration of music but a statement of hope, resilience, and cultural pride.
