Luis Almagro, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS), has reaffirmed the OAS’s continued support for Haiti’s transitional government amid the nation’s ongoing political challenges. Almagro confirmed this commitment during a phone conversation with Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dominique Dupuy, sharing the news on his official X account.
Almagro emphasized the crucial role of international cooperation in stabilizing Haiti and ensuring that elections scheduled for November 2025 proceed smoothly. “We look to the international community to support this process, creating the governance and security conditions necessary for a fair and transparent electoral process,” he said.
Despite international efforts, including a mission led by Kenya, Haiti’s security situation has worsened, with armed gangs controlling large portions of the country. These groups have severely destabilized the political landscape, threatening Prime Minister Conille’s interim government. Almagro condemned the recent surge of violence aimed at derailing the transition and called for a united international stance against such destabilizing actions.
“The international community must be unequivocal in condemning violence, urging all Haitian actors to place national interests above individual ambitions,” Almagro added.
