A new group of officers has officially joined the Haitian National Police (PNH) as state employees, a move aimed at strengthening the force as Haiti grapples with widespread gang violence. The appointment comes as armed groups continue to disrupt daily life in various regions, posing significant threats to public safety.
Prime Minister Garry Conille recently highlighted the growing role of elite police units in the fight against gang activity, referencing a notable operation in the Pernier neighborhood. This area remains under the control of the Kraze Baryè gang, led by Vitelhomme Innocent, who is currently wanted by U.S. authorities. The operation, while significant, resulted in the loss of an armored vehicle belonging to the Multinational Security Support (MMSS) mission.
Despite their motivation, Haitian police officers face substantial challenges. A lack of resources, difficult working conditions, and the increasing complexity of gang operations have made their task even more demanding. Police unions and officers have expressed frustration at the limited support available as they work to restore order in the country.
