Leslie Voltaire, president of Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), has strongly denounced an alliance between prominent Haitian political figures and the notorious gang coalition, “Viv Ansanm.” The alliance, involving individuals such as Claude Joseph, Liné Balthazar, André Michel, Saurel Yacinthe, and Rosny Cadet, has sent shockwaves through the nation. It highlights what many see as a dangerous normalization of criminal activity and a betrayal of Haiti’s sovereignty.

In his statement, Voltaire described the collaboration as a direct attack on republican principles and an affront to the victims of gang violence. He emphasized that by associating with armed factions, these political leaders are undermining national efforts to combat the pervasive influence of criminal groups.

Viv Ansanm, led by G9 gang leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, has been linked to widespread violence, including kidnappings, assassinations, and extortion. For many Haitians, the gang coalition epitomizes the lawlessness and insecurity that have gripped the country. Voltaire’s criticism underscores the contradiction between Haiti’s efforts to dismantle these groups and the political legitimization they now appear to be receiving.

This political alliance comes at a critical juncture when the CPT is striving to lead Haiti toward democratic elections and restore a semblance of order. The CPT’s fragile efforts to neutralize armed groups and their suppliers risk being derailed by this scandalous partnership.

Critics argue that this alliance hampers Haiti’s path toward rebuilding trust with its citizens. Voltaire warned that such actions deepen societal fractures and perpetuate the structural inequalities that fuel violence. For a population already traumatized by years of instability, the message is clear: political ambition is being prioritized over national unity.

The partnership with Viv Ansanm sends a troubling signal to both the Haitian people and the international community. It is seen as an attempt to legitimize criminal organizations as political actors, undermining the rule of law and sidelining legitimate institutions.

Human rights advocates and victims of gang violence have been especially vocal in their outrage. For displaced families, business owners forced into ruin, and communities living in fear, this alliance represents a profound betrayal. By engaging with the very forces responsible for their suffering, these political leaders are perceived as complicit in perpetuating a cycle of impunity.

At the center of this controversy is the “three sectors proposal,” a document signed by political figures and gang representatives, presented as a pathway to resolve Haiti’s crisis. However, critics view it as an explicit recognition of armed gangs as political stakeholders.

The proposal has deepened distrust in Haiti’s political class, further complicating efforts for a democratic transition. Instead of addressing root causes of instability, the move is seen as reinforcing the influence of armed groups and sidelining peaceful, lawful solutions.

Voltaire’s condemnation reflects widespread frustration with the political status quo. His call to uphold law and honor resonates with those who see the need for accountability and ethical governance in Haiti’s turbulent political landscape.
