Bruno Mourral’s debut feature, Kidnapping Inc., is making waves internationally for its bold mix of humor and social commentary, set against Haiti’s turbulent landscape. After a well-received premiere at Cap-Haïtien and recent wins at the Cinéstar International Film Festival in Guadeloupe, where it picked up the jury prize and acting awards, the film is set to debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025. Critics have noted the film’s unique style, calling it a dark comedy thriller with both heart and wit, focusing on two bumbling kidnappers who become entangled in a political conspiracy.
The plot follows two inexperienced kidnappers who, in attempting a simple abduction of a senator’s son, find themselves wrapped up in something far bigger. Mourral’s inspiration stems from a tragic chapter in his own life—the murder of his father in Haiti during his time in film school. This dark experience informed his approach to the film’s tone, creating a story that uses humor to explore the absurdities of life amidst violence, corruption, and social instability.
Despite the serious backdrop, Kidnapping Inc. has resonated with audiences for its humorous treatment of difficult subjects. The film has drawn comparisons to Pulp Fiction and City of God, with critics praising Mourral’s approach to blending grim social realities with comedic elements. As Cinema Daily US’s Abe Friedtanzer noted, the film is “great fun and isn’t easy to shake,” striking a delicate balance between portraying Haitian realities and delivering a riveting story. Mourral himself describes Kidnapping Inc. as a tribute to the resilience of ordinary Haitians, who use humor to cope with the hardships around them.
Filming in Port-au-Prince was fraught with challenges, from financial setbacks to direct confrontations with gang violence. In 2021, two crew members were kidnapped, resulting in a high-profile intervention by Haiti’s prime minister. The movie’s production halted multiple times due to instability, with sponsors withdrawing support, yet Mourral’s dedication kept it moving forward, often funded by his family and close supporters.
