Kenya’s Consul General Nominee to Haiti, Noor Gabow, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of Kenyan police officers participating in the multinational peacekeeping mission in Haiti. Addressing Kenya’s Parliamentary Vetting Committee, Gabow assured that all officers have received their salaries and continue to perform effectively in their roles.
Gabow has emphasized his commitment while rejecting reports on social media that suggested troop officers were leaving the mission. He called for caution against misinformation, noting its potential to undermine morale and distort facts.
He highlighted significant achievements by Kenyan police officers in Haiti. He noted that their efforts have reclaimed critical infrastructure, including a previously gang-controlled airstrip and a port that now facilitates the free flow of goods.
Kenya’s police force, deployed as part of a United Nations-backed initiative, leads a mission to combat the escalating gang violence in Haiti. This deployment aligns with Kenya’s broader commitment to global peacekeeping efforts.
Haiti has faced persistent gang violence, which surged in February 2024 with coordinated attacks in Port-au-Prince. Armed groups now control significant portions of the city, severely affecting food security and humanitarian aid delivery. These gangs are accused of widespread human rights abuses, including murder, rape, looting, and kidnappings.
The Kenyan mission aims to address these challenges by stabilizing affected areas, securing key assets, and improving safety for residents.
Gabow’s nomination as Consul General is part of a broader strategy by the Kenyan government to strengthen leadership in key positions. Principal Administrative Secretary Arthur A. Osiya stated that the appointments, made in consultation with the Public Service Commission, aim to bolster the government’s capacity to fulfill its mandate effectively.
This high-profile appointment underscores Kenya’s commitment to contributing to international peace and security while supporting its personnel abroad.
