Port-au-Prince (Haiti Wire) – Haitian authorities inaugurated a new military base named “Vertières” in Tabarre on Monday, as part of efforts to strengthen national security and regain control of areas affected by gang violence. The base, which spans several acres, has the capacity to house more than 2,000 soldiers and military equipment, including helicopters, according to Leslie Voltaire, an urban planner and politician.
During the ceremony, General Derby Guerrier, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAD’H), urged the High Command and the government to supply additional resources and equipment to support joint operations with the Haitian National Police (PNH). Guerrier emphasized that these reinforcements are critical for reclaiming areas dominated by armed groups and restoring security for the population.
The inauguration comes amid heightened concerns over Haiti’s security situation, with many areas under the control of gangs. Authorities have sought to reinforce the capabilities of both the military and police in an effort to address the ongoing violence.
