Haiti’s Prime Minister Marks 100 Days with Limited Security Gains

Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille has completed 100 days in office with limited progress on key issues. While efforts to establish the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) for 2025 elections have moved forward, the government's response to the ongoing security crisis remains insufficient. Armed gangs continue to control large areas of Port-au-Prince, causing public frustration as Conille faces pressure for more decisive action. Despite international support, including the deployment of a Multinational Security Support Mission, the government's efforts to restore peace and regain territory have yet to yield significant results.

Port-au-Prince, September 19, 2024 – Garry Conille, Haiti’s prime minister, has reached 100 days in office with mixed results. While progress has been made on establishing the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) for 2025 elections, little has been achieved in tackling the worsening security crisis.

Conille, who replaced Ariel Henry in June following his resignation amid violence, faces pressure from the public for concrete action against armed gangs that continue to dominate large parts of the capital. Despite support from international actors and the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) led by Kenya, tangible results in restoring security remain elusive.

Conille’s priorities include organizing elections, a constitutional referendum, and restoring peace, but the government has yet to regain any territory from gangs or improve safety in key areas of Port-au-Prince. Armed groups still control much of the metropolitan area, impacting daily life and raising public frustration
