Haiti’s new prime minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé prioritizes security and elections

Alix Didier Fils-Aimé officially took office as Haiti’s new prime minister on Monday, pledging to tackle the country’s critical security issues and ensure the organization of credible elections. Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony in Port-au-Prince, Fils-Aimé highlighted restoring public safety, improving infrastructure, and guaranteeing freedom of movement as key priorities for the transitional government.

“Restoring security is the foundation upon which we will build a successful political transition,” Fils-Aimé said. “The Haitian people deserve peace, stability, and sustainable development.”

Fils-Aimé’s appointment comes after the Transitional Presidential Council dismissed Garry Conille, who had been in office for just five months. Conille’s removal followed weeks of disputes with the council over control of key ministries, including Justice and Finance. His ousting further underscores the political instability that has gripped Haiti, exacerbated by rampant gang violence that has paralyzed large swathes of the country.

In his address, Fils-Aimé emphasized the importance of unity among Haitians and called for collective responsibility to guide the nation through its transitional period. He acknowledged the challenges posed by armed groups that have been obstructing transportation routes, ports, and airports. To address the pervasive security crisis, he proposed a comprehensive strategy involving collaboration among all security forces in partnership with multinational support.

“We must put the interests of our country above all else and work together to create a secure environment,” Fils-Aimé stated. He reiterated the transitional government’s commitment to organizing free and uncontested elections, which are seen as critical to restoring legitimate governance in Haiti, a country that has not held national elections since 2016.

The leadership change has raised concerns about political and social stability, particularly as Haiti continues to struggle with severe humanitarian needs and widespread displacement caused by gang activity. According to the UN, thousands have been killed or injured in gang-related violence this year, with more than 700,000 people—half of them children—forced to flee their homes.

Fils-Aimé’s appointment comes amid international efforts to stabilize Haiti, including the deployment of a multinational force led by Kenya to assist the Haitian National Police. However, the impact of this mission remains limited, as gangs continue to exert control over much of Port-au-Prince and other critical areas.

The new prime minister’s promise to improve economic conditions also featured prominently in his inaugural speech. He pledged state support for sectors that create jobs, such as agriculture, commerce, and industry, and called for a renewed focus on economic recovery.

As Fils-Aimé assumes office, the Haitian public and international community will be closely watching his government’s efforts to deliver on promises of security, political stability, and progress toward democratic elections.
