New York, September 23, 2024 — At the UN’s Future Summit, Haitian presidential adviser Leslie Voltaire called for comprehensive reforms in international institutions to better address the needs of developing nations like Haiti. Speaking at the event, held as part of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Voltaire emphasized the importance of creating a more inclusive global system to effectively confront modern crises.
Voltaire’s speech centered on the urgent need for multilateralism to adapt to the evolving geopolitical landscape. He argued that global institutions, particularly the United Nations, must undergo reforms to provide greater representation to developing countries. “Countries like Haiti must have a say in the major decisions that shape our world,” Voltaire said, stressing that the UN Security Council, in particular, needs to be restructured to reflect the current balance of power.
The adviser also outlined the multidimensional challenges facing Haiti, including a security crisis worsened by organized crime, drug trafficking, and natural disasters aggravated by climate change. Voltaire used Haiti as a case study to highlight how underrepresented nations are disproportionately affected by global issues and require more robust support from the international community. He called for collective action, especially in areas such as security cooperation and climate justice, to help nations like Haiti recover and thrive.
“Multilateral efforts must be reinforced if we are to overcome the global challenges that disproportionately impact vulnerable nations,” Voltaire stated, underscoring the role of international solidarity.
Voltaire further emphasized the need to include youth in decision-making processes, noting that their involvement is essential for ensuring sustainable and equitable futures. His remarks came ahead of the anticipated arrival of Haiti’s transitional president, Edgard Leblanc Fils, who is set to address the UN General Assembly later this week.
