The Haitian National Police (PNH), supported by specialized units such as SWAT, UDMO, and BOID, conducted large-scale operations over the weekend in Artibonite. These operations aimed to dismantle strongholds of the Gran Grif gang and restore law and order in areas plagued by criminal activity.
PNH forces engaged in armed confrontations, resulting in the deaths of several suspected gang members, while others fled. Authorities successfully reclaimed control of several areas which had been under gang control.
During the operation, the PNH reported losing an armored vehicle. According to the police, the vehicle became stuck in a swampy area near Savyen during a patrol. Videos circulating on social media show the immobilized vehicle engulfed in flames after being set on fire by gang members.
Despite this setback, the PNH emphasized their resolve to continue the fight against gang violence. “Despite the officers’ efforts, they were unable to recover the vehicle. The criminals took advantage of the situation and set it ablaze,” the PNH communication department stated.
As part of the crackdown, several properties linked to gang members were destroyed, including homes and business spaces belonging to known gang affiliates, such as individuals identified as “Benben” and “Julcin.” Authorities also recovered livestock stolen by gang members, including cattle, goats, and pigs, which were displayed in the Solidaire public square for rightful owners to claim.
The PNH’s intensified operations reflect their commitment to dismantling gang networks and restoring security across Haiti. Speaking on Sunday, December 29, 2024, officials reiterated their determination to uproot criminal strongholds and establish peace.
While challenges persist, the PNH’s actions are a significant step toward addressing the escalating gang violence that has gripped parts of the country, particularly in regions like Artibonite.
