PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitian journalist Luckenson Jean has been nominated for the Rory Peck Award for his video journalism covering the escalating gang violence and its effects on local communities. The French news agency AFP, where Jean is employed, announced his nomination on Monday, October 21, 2024.
Jean’s work has focused extensively on capturing the plight of displaced Haitians, particularly those forced into makeshift camps due to gang violence in Port-au-Prince. His video reports have offered a stark portrayal of the worsening security situation in Haiti, a crisis that has left thousands homeless and living in fear.
In an interview with Voice of America (VOA), Jean expressed his appreciation for the recognition. “This award is a testament to the work I’ve done to document the ongoing crisis in Haiti,” he said. Despite the dangers he faces, Jean has continued to report on the violence and displacement caused by armed groups, showing resilience in the face of adversity.
Threats and Relocation
Like many Haitians, Jean has not been immune to the violence that grips the capital. Armed gangs have targeted neighborhoods across Port-au-Prince, and Jean was forced to flee his own home when gunmen invaded his area. According to AFP, the journalist had to relocate to stay with friends for safety, yet he remained undeterred in his mission to document the crisis.
Jean’s ability to persist despite the personal risks underscores his commitment to shedding light on the challenges facing ordinary Haitians. His videos not only highlight the insecurity but also give voice to those suffering its consequences. Jean has described his work as “therapeutic,” helping him cope with the dangers and hardships that accompany living in a country beset by violence.
Recognition and Nomination
Born in the southern Haitian city of Jacmel, Jean has built a reputation for his courage and dedication to journalism. His nomination for the Rory Peck Award, which celebrates freelance video journalists who cover news in challenging environments, is seen as recognition of his perseverance. The Rory Peck Awards, named after a British freelance cameraman who died in 1993, are considered one of the most prestigious honors in video journalism.
Jean will find out if he wins the award at a ceremony scheduled to take place in London, United Kingdom, on November 28, 2024.
