Haiti will participate in the upcoming COP16 Biodiversity Summit in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024. Leaders from across the world, including presidents from Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Panama, and Ghana, will attend to address critical global biodiversity challenges. Haiti’s presence underscores its commitment to environmental issues and international cooperation.
Colombian Environment Minister Susana Muhamad, during a press conference at the United Nations in New York, highlighted the financing of climate goals as a key issue for discussion. While consensus on the objectives set during the 2022 Montreal summit remains strong, Muhamad noted that the most difficult conversations will focus on how to fund climate and biodiversity projects, particularly for emerging economies like Haiti.
COP16 will explore several financial mechanisms, such as international development cooperation, climate debt relief, forest wealth funds, and potential global tax policies. Muhamad emphasized the need for private sector involvement in biodiversity efforts to ensure the implementation of real solutions beyond policy discussions.
With 92 environment ministers set to participate, Haiti’s role in the summit is crucial, especially as it grapples with environmental challenges such as deforestation and climate resilience. The summit will offer Haiti a platform to advocate for greater financial support to meet its biodiversity and sustainability goals.
