New York, Sept. 23, 2024 — Guatemala’s President, Bernardo Arévalo, has confirmed his country’s commitment to deploying 150 military officers to Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM). This announcement was made during the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Special Advisory Group meeting on Haiti in New York, where Arévalo addressed the ongoing political, humanitarian, and security crises affecting the Caribbean nation.
During his speech, Arévalo emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to resolving the challenges Haiti faces, highlighting that sustainable peace would require both security measures and economic progress. “The path to peace in Haiti requires not only security but also economic and social advancement,” he stated, reinforcing Guatemala’s support for inclusive and lasting solutions.
Arévalo’s announcement marks Guatemala’s first participation in ECOSOC’s Special Advisory Group on Haiti. He underscored the need for actions taken at the meeting to contribute to Haiti’s long-term stability and prosperity. He added that Guatemala’s participation in the MSSM reflects the country’s dedication to promoting peace and security in the region.
