Port-au-Prince, Haiti – Rosny Smarth, agronomist and former Prime Minister of Haiti, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the age of 84. His death was confirmed by multiple sources, including Danio Siriack of the OPL party.
Smarth served as Prime Minister under President René Préval from February 1996 to June 1997, remaining in office to manage transitional affairs until October of that year. Known for his commitment to democracy and integrity, Smarth’s leadership left a lasting mark on Haiti’s political landscape.
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé expressed his sorrow, describing Smarth as a man of deep conviction and empathy who dedicated his life to Haiti’s progress. “His leadership and ethical vision will continue to inspire generations,” Fils-Aimé said.
Smarth’s career spanned international and national service. Born in Cavaillon, he studied agronomy in Chile and worked on agrarian reform under Salvador Allende. He later held academic and advisory roles before becoming Prime Minister, navigating a turbulent political period in Haiti.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced as the nation reflects on his enduring legacy.
