Félix Cumbé, the celebrated Haitian-Dominican composer and singer, has died at the age of 60. His passing occurred on February 10, 2025, at Cedimat hospital in the Dominican Republic, where he had been undergoing treatment for health complications. His wife, Fanny Carolina Adames, confirmed that he suffered multiple cardiac arrests during a catheterization procedure.

Born Critz Sterlin in 1961 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Cumbé migrated to the Dominican Republic at just 13 years old. Carrying only his guitar and dreams of a better future, he eventually became one of the most recognized figures in Dominican music.

A Musical Legacy That Crossed Borders

Cumbé’s career took off in the 1980s with “El Gatico,” a merengue hit that quickly became a staple in Dominican music. His collaboration with Aníbal Bravo’s orchestra cemented his place in the industry, and his songwriting talents extended beyond his own performances.

One of his most enduring contributions to bachata was “Déjame Volver,” a song he co-wrote and performed with Dominican music legend Fernando Villalona. Over the decades, his music continued to resonate, blending Haitian and Dominican influences into a unique and beloved style.

In December 2022, after more than four decades in the Dominican Republic, Cumbé was granted Dominican citizenship, recognizing his contributions to the country’s musical and cultural landscape.

A Viral Comeback and Final Years

Despite health challenges in recent years, including a stroke in May 2024, Cumbé remained active in music. In 2024, his 25-year-old bachata song “Fui Fuá” experienced a resurgence, becoming a viral hit on TikTok. A remix collaboration with Crazy Design introduced his work to a new generation, earning him a nomination for “Collaboration of the Year” at the 2025 Premios Soberano.
