On November 27, 2024, Dany Laferrière, a towering figure in Haitian and global literature, will receive a unique honor as Canada Post unveils a commemorative stamp bearing his likeness. This accolade, shared with four other notable figures of French-Canadian literature, underscores his enduring legacy and influence.

The unveiling will take place during the Montreal Book Fair’s inauguration at Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle, alongside tributes to the late Marie-Claire Blais and Marguerite-A. Primeau, and appearances by Laferrière and Antonine Maillet.

A literary voice that illuminates

Canada Post’s selection of Laferrière celebrates his ability to inspire through his prose, which often explores themes of immigration, identity, and resilience. His acclaimed works, such as L’Odeur du Café and L’Enigme du Retour, have cemented his place in literary history, captivating readers across Canada and the world.

The announcement comes shortly after Laferrière served as the guest of honor at Martinique’s Festival en Pays Rêvé. The event celebrated global literary voices under the theme The Power of the Book, emphasizing the transformative potential of storytelling.

An internationally revered author

Laferrière’s contributions to literature extend far beyond Canadian borders. Earlier this year, he received the Grand Prix of French-speaking Ambassadors in Paris for his Petit traité du racisme en Amérique (Little Treatise on Racism in America), a searing examination of systemic racism. The Haitian Embassy in France lauded this achievement, emphasizing Laferrière’s role as a torchbearer of Haitian creative genius and a voice for French speakers worldwide.

His literary achievements and accolades reflect a career dedicated to celebrating the human spirit, challenging injustice, and uncovering the nuanced beauty of life’s complexities.

Immortalized through stamps

The new Canada Post stamps honor Laferrière alongside Marie-Claire Blais, Antonine Maillet, Jean Marc Dalpé, and Marguerite Primeau. Each writer represents diverse perspectives and experiences, contributing to the rich tapestry of French-Canadian literature. The stamps not only celebrate their literary accomplishments but also serve as a reminder of literature’s ability to transcend boundaries and unite people through shared stories.

A legacy to celebrate

For Laferrière, this recognition marks yet another milestone in a career that bridges cultures and languages. As a native of Petit-Goâve, Haiti, his journey to the Académie Française and now to this commemorative tribute reflects the depth of his influence and the universality of his work.

The Montreal ceremony promises to be a moment of pride not only for French-Canadian literature but also for Haiti and the global literary community. Laferrière’s inclusion in this honor is a testament to his enduring impact as a storyteller whose words continue to resonate across generations and geographies.
