Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced plans to visit Haiti, specifically the historic town of Jacmel, to honor the country’s pivotal role in aiding Latin American independence. This visit will highlight Haiti’s significant yet often overlooked contributions, particularly its support of Simón Bolívar, the “Liberator” of South America. Bolívar stayed in Jacmel during his efforts to secure independence for several Latin American nations.

Ahead of the visit, Haiti’s Minister of Culture and Communication, Patrick Delatour, led a delegation to Jacmel to ensure the city is ready for the high-profile occasion. The team focused on logistical preparations, including cleanup and sanitation efforts, while also evaluating the immediate needs of the historic town.

During his visit, Delatour revisited a long-dormant plan initiated during René Préval’s administration, which aimed to establish Jacmel as the tourism capital of southern Haiti. The plan included constructing an airport, developing modern infrastructure, and highlighting the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Delatour emphasized the need to use this presidential visit as a springboard to renew discussions and investments in Jacmel’s development.

Jacmel, renowned for its colonial architecture, vibrant art scene, and rich history, was once a focal point of Haiti’s tourism strategy. Delatour, an accomplished architect with a master’s degree in historical preservation from Columbia University, expressed his commitment to revitalizing Jacmel’s status as a cultural and tourism hub. His previous contributions include the restoration of UNESCO World Heritage Site Citadelle Laferrière, showcasing his dedication to preserving Haiti’s historical treasures.

President Petro’s visit is laden with historical and political significance. Haiti’s support for Bolívar in the early 19th century symbolizes its commitment to anti-colonial movements and solidarity with oppressed nations. Petro’s gesture seeks to reaffirm these ties while acknowledging the complexities of modern relations. He has previously expressed Colombia’s sense of responsibility for the involvement of Colombian mercenaries in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.
