Colombian President Gustavo Petro is scheduled to visit Jacmel, in Haiti’s South-East department, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The visit, announced by Leslie Voltaire, President of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), is part of an ongoing effort to deepen cooperation between the two nations.
Voltaire made the announcement during the launch of the “Mardis de la Nation” initiative on January 14, 2025. The visit underscores Haiti and Colombia’s shared commitment to collaboration in critical areas such as security, humanitarian assistance, trade, and education.
President Petro’s visit will include a second session of the Binational Council of Ministers between Colombia and Haiti, building on discussions held in December 2024 in Colombia. This council aims to address mutual concerns in peacebuilding, security, justice, migration, education, and culture. The meeting in Jacmel is expected to produce agreements tailored to the needs of the Haitian population.
The Colombian delegation will also participate in activities aimed at fostering long-term development and responding to immediate challenges faced by Haitians.
The CPT has highlighted the significance of this visit in enhancing Haiti’s relations with Latin American nations. It represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen alliances and explore practical solutions to the region’s shared challenges.
Petro’s visit is seen as a positive step toward regional collaboration, with the potential to inspire further partnerships between Haiti and other Latin American nations.
Further details about the visit’s agenda and expected outcomes are anticipated as the date approaches.
