Efforts to stabilize Haiti may lead to elections by February 2026, according to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Eminent Persons Group (EPG), which is working to mediate the country’s ongoing political crisis. The EPG, composed of former prime ministers from the Bahamas, Saint Lucia, and Jamaica, has been engaging with Haitian stakeholders to support a Haitian-led solution to the instability.

Haiti’s government made progress last month by forming a provisional electoral council, a crucial step toward organizing national elections. Although Haiti is required to hold elections every five years, the last vote took place in 2016. The transitional presidential council, tasked with overseeing the electoral process, must ensure elections are held before its mandate expires in February 2026.

Former Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie, one of the EPG members, along with former Prime Ministers Dr. Kenny Anthony of Saint Lucia and Bruce Golding of Jamaica, will meet with Haiti’s transitional presidential council to discuss the election timeline and ongoing challenges.

Haiti’s political crisis, exacerbated by gang violence and economic difficulties, has stalled the electoral process for years. CARICOM’s EPG aims to foster dialogue among political actors and create a stable environment for democratic elections, which are seen as critical to restoring order and governance in the country.
