A contingent of six soldiers from the Bahamas arrived in Haiti on Friday to support efforts against the country’s increasingly violent criminal gangs. The deployment is part of a larger commitment made by the Bahamian government, which previously pledged to send 150 soldiers to assist Haiti as part of a multinational security mission.
The arrival of these soldiers comes amid a surge in gang violence, particularly in the capital, Port-au-Prince. On Thursday night, the neighborhood of Solino was terrorized by armed groups firing indiscriminately, leading to the death of an 18-year-old woman who was shot in the head while watching television at home. Local residents reported that several others were injured during the attack.
The violence also spread to other parts of the city, with automatic gunfire heard in areas such as Pernier, leaving many Haitians fearful for their safety. Despite ongoing efforts by international forces and the Haitian police to combat the gangs, criminal groups continue to exert control over large sections of the capital.
